Disease in Horses

Authorities in the Australian state of Victoria are perplexed with the emergence of neurologic disease which has gripped
the population of horses.

Though there were many such reports in 1974, the investigation team is looking at the possibility
of MVE or other arboviruses.

In the wake of rising number of cases, the State Government of Victoria's Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has reportedly appealed the veterinary practitioners to produce the samples of the infected horses.

Victoria's Acting Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Andrew Cameron confirmed the spurt in cases and assured that proper investigation would be done so that the exact cause of such neurologic disease can be figured out.

Responding to the outrage over the concern, Dr. Cameron claimed that there is no risk to human life and recommended the owners of horses to remain vigilant to the symptoms produced by the horses.

However, Dr. Cameron suggested the owners that stabling during the dawn and dusk periods of mosquito activity can prove to be a highly effective procedure to combat the infection. Additionally, he claimed that topical treatments and repellants should be regularize in order to avoid any further health concern.

Meanwhile, preliminary reports claims that there is no apparent connection with the bat populations found and the symptoms and course of illness in affected horses are unlike Hendra virus infection.
